Noboribetsu Hell Valley, Cape Chikyu & Lake Toya

Jigokudani, and why 35 minutes is enough

Noboribetsu Jigokudani. Hell Valley, is a 450-metre-wide explosion crater venting sulphur steam through a floor of grey and ochre rock, and it is free to walk into. The boardwalk from the car park to the Tessen Pond viewpoint is flat, short and the reason the tour can call itself wheelchair accessible.

Thirty-five minutes covers the main boardwalk comfortably. It would not cover the full hour-long loop up to Oyunuma and the natural foot bath in the river, which is what you would do with a car and a free afternoon. This is the trade the whole tour makes: six places at a walking-pace glance instead of two at leisure.

The valley feeds the onsen town below it, about 10,000 litres of hot water an hour, in eleven different mineral types, which is why Noboribetsu is the best-known hot spring resort in Hokkaido. The tour does not include a bath.

Cape Chikyu and the Silo Observatory

Cape Chikyu is twenty-five minutes and needs no more: a headland of 100-metre cliffs where the Pacific horizon curves visibly on a clear day, which is what the name means. Earth Cape. On a grey day it is a viewpoint in fog, and the operator makes no promises about that.

The Silo Observatory follows for thirty minutes, looking down the length of Lake Toya to Nakajima Island in the middle. Toya is a caldera lake, nine kilometres across, that never freezes; the island in it is a lava dome. There is a shop, which is where most of the thirty minutes goes.

Mt Usu, the ropeway, and the money question

The longest stop is 80 minutes at Mt Usu-Shinzan, and it is the one you make a decision about. Mt Usu is genuinely active, it erupted in 1943, 1977 and again in 2000, and Showa-shinzan, the lava dome next to it, grew out of a wheat field during the 1943 eruption while a local postmaster kept the only continuous record of it.

The ropeway climbs to a ridge station with a view over the crater and back across Lake Toya. The ticket is not included; the listing marks the stop as an extra fee. If the weather is clear, take it. If it is not, the 80 minutes is a long time at a souvenir complex, and that gap is where several of the 4.3-star reviews come from.

Showa-shinzan itself gets a separate twenty minutes, and the day closes with 35 minutes at Lake Shikotsu, Japan's second-deepest lake at over 360 metres and the northernmost that never freezes.

Take it if you want the easiest day to organise

Pickup from two named points in the middle of the city, a ten-hour loop, six landscapes, and back where you started. No meeting-point hunting at 07:50, no train connections, no driving. It is also the only listing here that states wheelchair accessibility, and the flat boardwalks at Jigokudani and the observation decks are consistent with that.

It runs year round, which matters more than it sounds. In April, May and November, when the flower tours have nothing to show and the ski days have not started, this circuit and the Sapporo city day are close to the only working options in the catalog. Steam does not have a season.

Tracy from Australia, on 1 March 2026, wrote simply: "the scenery was magnificent. it was a really enjoyable day." That was a winter departure.

Know what the 4.3 is telling you

It is the lowest rating in this catalog and the largest sample, which is usually what a mass-market coach product looks like. The platform's summary of 118 reviews from the past year describes "efficient logistics, helpful guides, and scenic stops that cover a lot in one day", and then names the recurring complaint: "Some travelers mention the bear ranch stop feels uncomfortable and suggest removing it or offering a clear alternative."

Noboribetsu Bear Park keeps brown bears in concrete enclosures and sells feed pellets to visitors. If that is not a thing you want to be part of, you can stay on the coach or spend the time in the onsen town instead, but it is worth knowing before you are standing there, and it is why the ethical line on the spec sheet above is not blank.

The other thing the reviews reflect is the fee structure: the tour price includes transport only, and travellers who did not read that arrive expecting the ropeway to be covered.

Bring cash, and enough of it

The listing's what-to-bring line is short: comfortable shoes, comfortable clothes, cash. Lunch is not included and there is no dedicated lunch stop of any length, so eat at one of the shops or bring food. Add the Mt Usu ropeway if you want it, and a few hundred yen at the observation-deck shops.

No eating or drinking is allowed in the vehicle, which on a ten-hour day is worth planning around.

The itinerary can change, and that gives you an exit

Unusually, this operator writes the escape clause in your favour: if stops change or are cancelled because of weather and you do not wish to accept the modified itinerary, you may cancel and receive a full refund. Most listings here reserve the right to change the route and offer nothing if they do.

Against that, the departure rules are strict. Arrive at the meeting point at least ten minutes early; the guide will not contact you in advance, and late arrivals and no-shows are not refunded.

Ages and seats

Infants aged 0 to 2 travel free if they do not take a seat and are declared at booking. From age 3 the adult rate applies, which makes this an expensive day for a family with small children. Child seats and children's meals are not provided and must be requested in advance.

At the other end, the listing rules out travellers over 75, a lower ceiling than the over-70 limits elsewhere in this catalog, but still a limit to check before booking for a parent.
